THESE SPONTANEOUS LETTERS, exchanged by Michelangelo and Vittoria Colonna in the Artist’s creative years 1541-1543,
far from being negligible notes are the only authentic documents of their relationship.

THESE AUTHENTIC LETTERS deserve empathetic attention, empirical research, and should be embedded in His Drawings, Capolavori, Poetry and Her Sonneteering.

THESE OCCASIONAL LETTERS register the inner dynamics of their relationship in those years, for instance Michelangelo’s oversensitive vulnerability to Vittoria’s rejection of too many sonnets he sent to her, of too many visits he paid in her house.

QUOTATIONS FROM VITTORIA’S LETTERS

Unico Maestro et
Mio Singolarissimo Amico
I have seen the Drawing of the Crucified
I have been looking at it in the light
and through a magnifying glass,
and in a mirror and I have never seen anything more accomplished

Magnifico Messer Michelangelo
Not earlier have I responded to your letter –
an answer to mine-, because I thought did you
and I continue writing each other…………
I would neglect my visits to the Chapel of Saint Catherine, ….and you would give up th visits of
The Chapel of Saint Paul instead of dialoguing
With your paintings already in the early morning
from dawn to dusk………

Your creations enforce improve the judgement of
The beholder. To clarify my point, I spoke
of the improvement of perfect things.

My dearest Signor Michelangelo,
I ask you to leave the crucifix to me only for a little while,
Even though you have not finished it yet, because I want to show it to the noblemen of the Reverend Cardinal of Mantua
In case you are not busy today, you may drop in and talk to me
At your convenience
At your command
